“From the Pit to Purpose: Staying Rooted When Life Breaks You”

I am Marben Bland, Pastor of the Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Athens, Georgia, with a Living The Word Moment

The recent tragedies involving the former Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and the father in Shreveport, Louisiana, remind us of a painful truth: many Black men are battling systemic barriers, personal struggles, and silent suffering. Research confirms what we already know: barriers to opportunity, mental health challenges, and cycles of poverty are real and persistent.

But Scripture gives us a greater truth.

In Genesis, Joseph was thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, and locked in prison—yet he stayed rooted in God. And because he stayed rooted, God raised him up with purpose and power (Genesis 50:20).

Here’s the lesson: what life tries to bury, God can still use.

So don’t give up on our brothers. Pray for them. Reach for them. Walk with them.

And most of all—stay rooted in God.

Because rooted people rise.
